Introduction: The Importance of Seasons in Our Walk with God
Over the years, I’ve found myself speaking frequently about the concept of times and seasons.
As a young minister, I learned the significance of seeking God’s heart to know the message that aligns with each season. I believe that every word from God lays a foundation for what He intends to do in both the present and the future.
However, there is a tendency among us to latch on to messages that soothe our struggles or give us temporary relief, rather than humbly seeking what God is truly saying in that moment. Not because we are rebellious, but because we may fear how far our hearts might be from His position if we ask.
Personal Experience: Facing the Reality of Seasons in My Life
A short while ago, I faced a health challenge that led me to surgery.
For months, I resisted this decision for various reasons. One day, as I tried to pray, the Lord stopped me and asked, "Isi, what bothers you the most about this surgery?"
At first, I hesitated, wondering if He wanted to hear my honest fears. But God encouraged me to speak, so I opened up. I told Him that I feared disappointment, feeling as though He should take away my pain through His power.
I also felt ashamed, not wanting to be perceived as someone who needed medical help like everyone else. Most of all, I dreaded feeling weak and needing help in that way.
God’s Response: A Lesson in Understanding Weakness and Strength
What happened next was transformative. I could sense God’s patient wisdom as He responded, “Your feelings of disappointment do not change who I am. I am not bothered by them. However, daughter, you need to check that attitude—nothing gives you the right to judge Me as unfaithful.”
Then He spoke to me about seasons: “Everything is about seasons. There is a time to be strong and a time to be weak. A time to shine, and a time when darkness seems to overshadow your glory. If you judge yourself by the attributes of a season, you do not fully understand Me—or yourself.”
I realized that just like nature’s seasons, each phase of our life has its purpose. The arrival of summer does not diminish the importance of winter—it merely signals a transition.
My temporary weakness didn’t mean I wasn’t strong; it meant my strength was in recognizing my need for Him and trusting completely. My value remained, and I knew I would emerge stronger on the other side of this season.
Understanding Overlapping Seasons
God often operates within seasons, and we must be able to recognize when they change.
Sometimes, however, seasons overlap. You might find yourself living in one season while another begins to emerge. This overlap can be confusing—making you wonder if you’re moving too fast or too slow. Are you meant to stay or to move forward?
When seasons overlap, it’s a sign that God is calling for expansion. He’s increasing your capacity.
Let me explain this with an example: imagine a leader who senses that God is preparing him for ministry expansion. He begins by building up his leadership team.
Then, suddenly, he starts receiving international proposals to expand his ministry. Although these opportunities confirm his calling, he realizes his team isn’t fully prepared for him to be absent for long periods.
This leader is experiencing an overlap in seasons. On one hand, he needs to build his team, but on the other, he must respond to these new opportunities.
What’s the solution? He needs to double-build. He must manage both seasons—strengthening his leadership while accepting the new international proposals.
Conclusion
God’s timing may stretch us beyond our comfort zones, but it is always purposeful. Each season is part of His grand design to shape us and prepare us for what lies ahead.
We shouldn’t fear or resist the transitions that come our way. Instead, we should embrace them as opportunities to grow, to trust God more deeply, and to walk more closely with Him.
In the end, seasons are the language of God’s divine plan. The question is, are we willing to listen and move with Him as He directs?
