Introduction
There was a time in my life when I struggled to obey God in a particular area. Each day felt like a mental battle, as I questioned why I needed to follow through simply because He had said so.
My struggle wasn’t because obedience was foreign to me—obeying God had always been a priority in my life—but in this instance, I wasn’t fully in sync with His perspective on certain matters.
It was in the middle of this internal conflict that God, by His grace, met me. His intervention wasn’t dramatic; it came in the form of a simple, yet profound, thought.
He explained to me that His commands are not about establishing a master-slave dynamic with us. Rather, with every instruction He allows us to understand His heart and embrace His ways.
God told me, “In your obedience, you do not add to or subtract from my Lordship as God of all creation; instead, you grow in your identity as My child. The more you not only act but think like Me, the more you become like Me.”
That moment shifted my entire perspective. God’s commandments, I realized, aren’t meant to distance us from Him. They are designed to draw us closer, transforming us into His likeness. If I couldn’t trust Him enough to fully engrave His commands into my heart as truth, I would always find myself wrestling with His instructions.
That day, I surrendered my opinions to God’s Word, aligning my life with His truth.
In doing so, I found grace—not just to carry out His will but to truly become one with His ways. This, I discovered, is what it means to love the Lord.
The Commandments Are Pathways to Life
When Jesus spoke of the greatest commandment—to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind—He wasn’t laying out a burdensome rule.
He was revealing the key to an uninterrupted connection with our Creator. This connection enables us to become the best version of ourselves, allowing us to reflect His love to those around us.
God’s commands are not restrictive—they are pathways to liberation. In every commandment, He reveals His nature, His authority, and His glory.
When we obey, we align ourselves with His divine power and person. It is in this alignment that we partake in His glory and grace, walking in the fullness of His presence.
Becoming Like Him Through Love
God’s call to love Him and love our neighbors is not a test we’re destined to fail. It’s an invitation to step into His fullness.
As we love Him with all our heart, mind, and strength, we begin to reflect His light and grace. It is in this posture of love that we grow, are refined, and ultimately shine as vessels of His glory.
When Jesus said to love God with everything—our imagination, heart, soul, and capacities—He was teaching us that this focus on divine love leads us into a life filled with His power and grace.
By making God’s love the core of our existence, we start to experience the eternal even within our limited, time-bound lives. We secure our place in God, radiating His light to the world around us.
Conclusion
As we deepen our love for God, we discover more about who we truly are. Created in His image and likeness, our true identity is found in Him.
It is through obedience and love that we grow into His nature, experiencing the fullness of life that He has always intended for us.
In our surrender, we find freedom. In our love, we find purpose. And in our obedience, we discover who we are meant to be—children of the living God, walking in His grace and power.
